LANZAROTE

Lanzarote is the Eastern-most island of the Canaries archipelago, lying about 125 kilometres off the coast of Africa. Though less well known than its’ larger neighbours Tenerife and Gran Canaria, it possesses the same dramatic volcanic scenery ranging from the sheer mountains in the north, beautiful white sand beaches, and the blasted landscape of the Timanfaya National Park.

Being so close to the Sahara the island enjoys a subtropical desert-like climate, but yet moderated by the sea and in the summer by the trade winds. Average high temperatures throughout the year are typically above 20C making it a year-round destination, particularly during the Northern Europe winter though it can also provide some welcome warmth and sunshine in the spring and autumn.

With flight times from the UK and northern Europe of 3 ½ to 4 hrs, the island’s airport at Arrecife (ACE) is served by several low-cost airlines. Away from the main tourist centres of Puerto del Carmen, Costa Teguise and Playa Blanca the island still retains much of its’ historic charm with small villages of white painted houses and the old island capital of Teguise.

With a benevelant climate and relatively quiet roads, the island is a fantastic destination for all manner of outdoor sports and activities: cycling, running, walking, golf, wind surfing and surfing. Based out of the sports complex of Club La Santa on the north coast, the island hosts one of the toughest Iron Man courses on the circuit and is perfect for early season bike and marathon training.

Surprisingly Lanzarote also boasts a flourishing vine-growing region and produces some quality wines to complement the varied and excellent cuisine available at the many restaurants and tapas bars: try the fresh fish at El Golfo.
